Curricular offerings and academic requirements for degree programs

Academic Course Catalogs for current and recent academic years

The Academic Catalog outlines all program offerings and degree requirements at Vermont Law and Graduate School. It contains course descriptions, academic policies, and other information relating to academic programs.

Certificates, joint degrees, dual-degree programs and exchange programs, both national and international, are summarized in the Academic Catalog. Students interested in these programs are encouraged to review the requirements and consult with their academic advisers early in their program. Students are encouraged to plan early in their academic career in order to be prepared for clinical and other experiential opportunities, certificates, exchange programs, and degree requirements as well as to meet their individual academic and professional goals. Specially trained advising teams assist students throughout the planning process.

Vermont Law and Graduate School is mission-driven, guided by its motto: “Lex pro urbe et orbe,” law for the community and the world, and its mission: To educate students in a diverse community that fosters personal growth and that enables them to attain outstanding professional skills and high ethical values with which to serve as lawyers and environmental and other professionals in an increasingly technological and interdependent global society.” This mission is apparent in the school’s longtime commitment to environmental law and policy and social justice and the varied careers its students have pursued in those fields.

The school offers a strong JD and graduate program, taught by talented and energetic full- and part-time faculty members. In addition to the traditional first-year and bar courses, the JD curriculum includes required legal writing and advocacy courses, an advanced writing requirement, and an experiential requirement of six credits ordinarily satisfied in a live-client clinic of a full- or part-time externship. The school also offers professional master’s degree programs in agriculture, energy, environmental law and policy, animal law, and public policy, a master’s of legal studies, and several LLM programs. It also offers a master’s and a professional certificate program in restorative justice. These degree programs prepare students for careers in environmental law and policy and in justice reform. Students also further develop their skills in a variety of law-related extra- and co-curricular activities and community service through organizations approved by the Student Bar Association.
