Why Isn’t The State An Open Book?

The event will feature a discussion of the public inspections issue now on the table in the Statehouse. The debate hinges on a Vermont Supreme Court decision that allows free public inspection of records. The Vermont Attorney General’s office seeks to eliminate any option for free access to state documents and wants to charge for collection and redaction of records. Journalists and First Amendment advocates say fees would impinge on the public’s right to know.
