Our speaker is:

  • an attorney and a professor of mathematics and statistics
  • an international human rights activist and former International Treasurer of Amnesty International
  • an expert witness in race and sex discrimination cases
  • Chair, Board of Directors, American Middle East Education (AMIDEAST)
  • Founder, Association for Women in Mathematics
  • Recipient, Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Engineering and Mathematics Mentoring, for her “outstanding record in support of minorities and especially women in mathematics”
  • Member, Statistics Without Borders
  • engaged in projects on human rights and elections in Iraq
  • She recently completed works on The Statistics of Genocide, and on the relation of the provision of sanitation to the education of women and girls
  • and she was a Freedom Rider in the early 60’s

As the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has stated: “Statistics Matter for Human Rights, and Human Rights Matter for Statistics”

Our speaker will discuss how she uses statistical analysis in developing effective strategies in the aid of Syrian refugees and in human rights challenges around the world.
