Biography

Stephanie attended Western New England University School of Law (WNE) and the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, graduating from WNE in 1996 and being admitted to the Ohio bar that same year. Stephanie served as a trial court judicial clerk, and later as the first General Division magistrate for the Court of Common Pleas in Licking County, Ohio, and as a representative in the Ohio Association of Magistrates.

In 2004, Stephanie returned to the northeast and joined the Vermont bar, practicing elder law and Medicaid planning, and then moving into general civil litigation. Stephanie also served as a regional coordinator for the Vermont Judiciary and helped launch Vermont’s DUI Treatment Docket in Windsor county, and served in the Drug and Mental Health Dockets in Washington and Rutland counties before joining Vermont Law and Graduate School’s (VLGS) Center for Justice Reform (CJR).

At VLGS, Stephanie was the lead organizer of the 2018 International Restorative Justice Conference: Global Unity and Healing, which brought restorative justice practitioners and academics together from around the world. She also served as assistant director and director of the CJR helping to develop and grow VLGS’ Master of Arts in Restorative Justice and Professional Certificate in Restorative Justice programs.

Stephanie also served as founding director of the National Center on Restorative Justice (NCORJ) whose broad objective is to improve criminal justice policy and practice in the United States through education, training, and research utilizing restorative justice principles and practices. The NCORJ is hosted by VLGS and operates in partnership with the University of Vermont, the University of San Diego, and its federal funder, the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance.

In 2023, Stephanie pivoted to being full-time faculty to cultivate justice reform thinking and pathways within the core JD program at VLGS. She serves as a professor of law, and when not teaching she can be found biking, hiking, or skate skiing with her family and friends.
